It’s Meat Shoot time!

The first meat shoot of the season at Florissant Eagles
“What’s more fun than drinking beer and shooting guns?” That’s what one contestant said to me at the Florissant Eagles meat shoot this weekend. And I have to say…amen, brother!
Though I’m not usually a gun person, there is something quite enticing about shooting tiny targets with a total stranger’s rifle, in the hopes of winning a big fat beef roast. Especially when the beer is flowing freely and the company is as nice as can be.
Like many other North County organizations, the Florissant Eagles host meat shoots every autumn – Saturdays, noon ’til dusk, through the end of November. But several regulars told me that the Eagles’ meat prizes are among the best in the area.
Basically you pay $3 to shoot in a round, and the best shot wins. But even if you go all ten rounds without a prize, you still have a chance at some meat. The “losers” all get entered into a second-chance drawing for a turkey.
You can bring your own gun (and many contestants did), or you can borrow one from the man who runs the meat shoot. You can also enjoy food and drink courtesy of the Eagles’ ladies auxiliary, and if you’re a history buff, you might want to explore the lodge itself.
Built in 1851, the former Coldwater Union Church is a lovely (albeit updated) Greek Revival building that housed various congregations up until 1921. According to one Eagles member, it was also a “house of ill repute” sometime around World War II.
So what do the Eagles do there now? Primarily support local charities. Through fundraisers like the meat shoots, they donate thousands of dollars every year to good causes, including organizations that help sick children.
So if you’re looking for something fun to do on a Saturday afternoon, why not visit the Florissant Eagles? They’re a very friendly, down-to-earth bunch, and they sure do give away some tasty meat!
