• Central Elementary School in Ferguson is one of five Missouri schools set to receive surplus computers from the U.S. Senate, Senator Claire McCaskill announced this week. As part of the Computers for Schools program, Central will be sent five Compaq D-510 desktop computers before the Senate’s winter holiday break.
“ The best way to continue to get value out of our tax dollars is to give this equipment back to the communities through our public school systems,” McCaskill said.
• The Greater North County Chamber of Commerce is offering North County residents a free prescription drug card, good for savings of up to 75%. There are no age or income restrictions, and residents are not required to fill out an application. The discount, which is available through the chamber’s website, can be used at 50,000 pharmacies nationwide.
• Hazelwood Parks & Recreation will be welcoming Santa Claus at the Hazelwood Community Center, 1186 Teson Rd, on Saturday, December 12. From 10:30am to noon, children can visit with Santa and get their picture taken with him. Photos are $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents. For more info, call (314) 731-0980.
• The American Planning Association recently selected Ferguson’s Complete Street’s ordinance as a model of cutting-edge planning practice, and will feature the legislation in its upcoming Essential Info Packet covering Complete Streets policies across the country. The ordinance, which established guidelines to make sure that local streets are designed with pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and transit riders in mind, was adopted in an effort to make Ferguson a more sustainable community.
• The Florissant City Council considered zoning changes this week that would allow the Kansas City-based chain 54th Street Grill & Bar to demolish the existing Ponderosa at 2895 N. Lindbergh and build a new restaurant in its place.
• American Eagle Credit Union recently opened a new branch at 1075 N. Lindbergh in Florissant. Built at the corner of St. Pierre, near St. Ferdinand Park, the branch is the second American Eagle location in North County.
• UMSL will host its fourth annual Warren Bellis Clarinet and Saxophone Festival this Wednesday, December 2 at the Touhill. From 9am to 2pm, clarinet and saxophone students from throughout the St. Louis area will perform with UMSL’s music faculty, the UMSL Symphonic Band and other local professional musicians, participating in various workshops and clinics. At the end of the festival, the Symphonic Band will perform a free concert, which starts at 7:30pm and is open to the public.
