I believe the distinction is that Pattonville is the first Missouri school or college to have an observatory AND a planetarium.

The Pattonville observatory cannot be the first observatory opened by a school or college in Missouri. The University of Missouri built the first observatory in the western United States in Columbia way way back in 1853. Although the original was torn down and moved several times, the present Laws Observatory at UMC on top of the new Physics Building was opened way back in 1966, three years before Pattonville.

Thanks Tim! Another reader mentioned that on Facebook. If it is open to the public, that means we have THREE observatories in North County! Wow!
