EarthDance launches Fresh Ideas film series

Happy Earth Day, NOCO fans! As you all must know by now, Ferguson is home to the oldest organic farm in Missouri, which the Mueller family started working in 1883. Today, the farm’s 14 acres are under the care of EarthDance, a fabulous nonprofit that’s currently training 30 apprentices in the ways of organic farming. And on May 2, I’m very proud to announce that EarthDance and NOCO are teaming up to launch a new film series!

Covering a whole range of green issues, from local food to small farms, “Fresh Ideas” will kick off with Dirt! The Movie, a fascinating documentary about our most basic resource, soil, and how it plays a vital role in everything from flooding and drought to climate change and even war.

The evening will begin with live music and a poetry reading, accompanied by organic popcorn and local beer and wine. Then we’ll roll the 90-minute film and follow it up with a short lecture by special guest Temra Costa, author of the new book Farmer Jane: Women Changing the Way We Eat.

Because the film series is a fundraiser for EarthDance, we’re asking for a suggested donation of $5 at the door. You can also give $25 and receive a signed copy of Farmer Jane.

Subsequent films in the series, which we’ll announce very soon, will be screened on July 11, August 29 and October 24, so mark your calendar! Other sponsors for Fresh Ideas include Blue’s Art House, Slow Food St. Louis and the Healthy Youth Partnership, and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Ferguson has generously volunteered to serve as our theater.

The May 2 kickoff event will start at 7pm and run through about 10pm @ 33 N. Clay, 63135. For more info on Dirt!, be sure to visit the film’s website and check out this clip:

  1. [...] EarthDance hosts movies and lectures here. You can learn to swing dance or do yoga here. This is also where the Ferguson Farmers Market took up residence for the winter, and where you’ll find a wonderful community music project called Strings Attached. [...]
