Ferguson woman undergoes a heart transplant

It has been an emotional April for the Moss family of Ferguson. On Sunday morning, following three weeks in Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s intensive care unit, 23-year-old Megan Moss’s damaged heart was removed and replaced with a healthy new heart from a donor.
Megan was diagnosed at age 15 with cardiomyopathy, a virus that inflames the heart muscle, and for seven years she lived a relatively normal life. But in November 2009, her medicines suddenly started failing, leaving her organs so starved for oxygen that they began to shut down.
Growing sicker by the day, Megan was recently moved to the top of the regional heart transplant list, and for a while, doctors were worried that she was too weak to survive the surgery. But late Saturday night, a donor heart became available and the transplant went forward…just in the nick of time.
Now the Mosses are asking for prayers (both for Megan and the donor family) and trying spread the word about the importance of organ donation. If you’d like to follow Megan’s process as she recovers, visit her family’s blog. You can also visit the KSDK website to see a recent video interview with Megan herself, and on May 8, stop by North County Christian School for a fundraiser barbeque. Scheduled for 4-8pm at 845 Dunn Road, the cookout will help the Moss family cover their rising medical expenses.
Stay strong, Megan! We’re all rooting for you here in Ferguson!
