They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Perhaps that’s why Tom Engelhardt enjoyed such a successful career. An editorial cartoonist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for 35 years, he, like many others in his profession, often played an influential role in shaping the narrative of important local and national issues.
Engelhardt worked at the Post from 1963 to 1997, covering everything from the Vietnam War and Watergate to the Civil Rights movement and numerous elections. Now, some of the more than 8,000 cartoons he created during his career are on display at the Mercantile Library, where you can view them for free through May 30.
There will also be a reception for the artist on Friday, May 14, from 6-8pm, and all are welcome! The Mercantile Library is located on the UMSL campus. For hours and parking info, look here.
