Announcing the Great NoCo Pizza Challenge!

NOCO fans, I hope you’re ready for an adventure! Because we’re about to undertake a four-month culinary odyssey, with the goal of answering one very important question: Who has the best pizza in North County?

I started thinking about this a few weeks ago, after dining at two classic local pizza joints that I hadn’t visited in quite some time. One totally lived up to its reputation. The other…well, let’s just say it was an off night.

Both of these restaurants are included in The Great NoCo Pizza Challenge, along with 20 more from all across the area that were nominated by you, the readers. Only independent North County restaurants are eligible, so there are no chains or franchises in this competition, although a few of the places do have another location somewhere else. For our purposes, please vote only on the North County location.

Here’s how the voting will work… Starting December 29, two restaurants will go head to head in a randomly selected match-up. Every Wednesday at 11am, a new match-up will begin and you will have one week to cast your vote. Winners will proceed through the brackets until the grand champion is announced on April 27, 2011.

There will be a “People’s Choice” champion and an “Editor’s Choice,” and for my part, I will actually purchase and review at least one pizza from all 22 restaurants. In support of these local businesses, who are often very slow during the winter months, I encourage you to do the same. Have some friends over! Make it fun! But know that you do not have to buy a pizza to cast your vote.

So…with that said, here are the contenders for Best Pizza in North County:

I’m in since I never have had a fresh Italy Pizza and get Faraci’s 3times a month. I never really have had many on this list.

  4. Emily says:

Nick and Elena’s hands down. Used to live right by there, ate it all the time. Had to move over an hour away, and STILL go by there any time I’m in town. Massa’s is a close second.

  5. [...] when I was starting to wonder if I’m the only one doing true head-to-head tastings for the Great NoCo Pizza Challenge, I got three lovely emails this morning, all from local families who’ve decided to play [...]

This is a great way to excite folks about food. A lot of fun. Can you print the past winners for those that are just catching on? Or am I missing them? I LOVE the pizza bracket!

Thanks Renee! I know I’m having fun with it! You can find a list of winners for each round on the left sidebar. I’ll be sure to update this every week. You can also read up on previous rounds by typing pizza challenge in the search box or following the Great NoCo Pizza Challenge tag at the bottom of each post.

I will vote for Ponticello’s everytime. I’ve been going there since I was a kid 50 years ago I there pizza is what I use as a standard for good pizza. I haven’t one I like better than Ponticello’s pizza!

  9. Daniel Douglas says:

Angelo S tops it all. Great family atmosphere, price is reasonable, and great service. I go there every weekend.

  10. Race says:

I just saw this contest, someone posted it on facebook. I agree with all the entries, except someone missed Badluci’s off page on Bennington drive I think. I know it’s too late, but I’d pick them over my favorites of Faraci’s, Pirrones, and even a BJ’s pizza, supreme with anchovies. Not by much, but too bad they aren’t in the contest.

  11. Bryan Johnson says:

Its gonna be hard to beat out ponticello’s because they make great pizza but I really hope Saullo’s wins not just because they make equal if not better pizza but in recent tragedy their family really deserves the win more than anyone else…on a side note Angelo’s makes some hella good pizza i’m very surprised they’re not still in the competition

  12. jack hillenbrand says:

Pirrone’s has the best without question…price and taste combined. Thier “A WINNER”

  13. Lisa Graham says:

I am a fan of Nick and Elenas and voted for them, but never had tasted any of the pizza’s in the competion, so thought I would go to Pirrone’s for a comparison. Pirrone’s tasted identical to nick and elana’s….stange but what will keep me going back to nick and Elana’s is price there large pizza was several dollers cheaper!
