North County students shine on Fine Arts Night

A big crowd gathered last year for the Northeast Deanery's first Fine Arts Night. This year, NoCo's Catholic school students will once again show off their talents.
Everyone knows that public schools offer music and art training, but many assume that Catholic schools do not. As Cara Koen from the Northeast Deanery explains, North County’s Catholic grade schools are not only embracing art & music education. They’re putting on a show!
Third and fourth grade students from the eight Catholic elementary schools located in the Northeast Deanery of the Archdiocese of St. Louis will perform together at the 2nd Annual Fine Arts Night on Thursday, March 1, 7:00p.m. at Trinity Catholic High School (1720 Redman Road, St. Louis, MO 63138). The evening will feature song and band performances, speech team demonstrations and a display of student artwork from all grade levels.
Music and Art teachers have been working together to coordinate the evening, helping students learn the songs, practicing with them and collecting art projects for the display. An addition to the program this year is the speech team demonstration. “The students are very excited about performing and showing you their talents. This is such a wonderful opportunity to showcase what our students are capable of doing,” said Sue Heredia, speech coach. “We can tell you that when they enter high school, these students have poise, presence of speaking in front of people, and many continue to develop their talent by participating in their school plays.”
“Fine Arts Night is an excellent opportunity to showcase student talents and work, and for teachers to highlight curriculum in music and art,” said Cara Koen, Director of Advancement for the Northeast Deanery Federation of Catholic Schools. “Bringing students and families from our eight schools together in this way has the added benefit of supporting our identity as one Catholic community.”

The Federation of Catholic Schools is a formal agreement between the pastors of the eleven parishes in the Northeast Deanery of the Archdiocese of St. Louis to work more closely together in support of the mission of Catholic education in the North County community. Flo Valley Theatre stages a new romantic comedy
On a cold, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, residents of this remote, mythical town find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.
Maine native John Cariani wrote this play as an homage to his hometown of Presque Isle, a remote peninsula with long winters and glorious views of the aurora borealis. It debuted off-Broadway in 2006, and will now be featured in five performances at St. Louis Community College – Florissant Valley’s Terry M. Fischer Theatre.
“Almost, Maine” is directed by Daniel Betzler and produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service. It will be staged February 17, 18, 24 & 25 at 7pm, and February 19 at 2pm. All shows are free!
The Fischer Theatre is located on the Flo Valley campus at 3400 Pershall Road, 63135. For more info, call (314) 513-4488.
Gallery 210 showcases iconic modern furniture

As director of design for the Herman Miller Furniture Company, George Nelson created some of the most well-recognized modern furniture of the 20th century. His work will be featured in a new exhibit at UMSL's Gallery 210.
FROM THE NEWS WIRE:
The man who helped usher in the age of the office cubicle is among the designers whose work will be on display at the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ Gallery 210. From Feb. 23 to April 7, the gallery will present “Design from Herman Miller.” The exhibit will feature selected works from designers who created for the Herman Miller furniture company. They range from mid-century iconographic designers George Nelson and Charles Eames to contemporary designers Yves Béhar and Studio 7.5, based in Berlin.
Aside from helping design the cubicle, Nelson is considered one of the founders of American Modernism. He designed much of the 20th century’s most iconic modernist furniture, including the Omni Wall Unit. Eames, a St. Louis native, is best known for the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, which has been in continuous production since its introduction.
Many people are probably already familiar with the work of Studio 7.5 but just don’t realize it. This group of designers, including Claudia Plikat, Roland Zwick, Carola Zwick, and Burkhard Schmitz, is responsible for the highly successful Mirra and Setu office chairs.
Yves Béhar designed the laptop design for One Laptop per Child, the world’s first $100 laptop. The founder of fuseproject, a San Francisco based design agency, he also created the Leaf Personal Light for Herman Miller.
An opening reception for “Design from Herman Miller” will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 23. The exhibition is made possible with support of Herman Miller and in part with grants from the Missouri Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Admission is free and open to the public.
Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday or by appointment. For directions and more info, visit the Gallery 210 website.
