Big News from the Ferguson Farmers Market…

October is usually a bit of a bummer in Ferguson, primarily because the farmers market is winding down. But not this year! On Saturday, October 30, the Ferguson Farmers Market will officially wrap up the 2010 season, bringing its outdoor offerings to a close. But guess what…the market is headed indoors for winter!

Local cheese, pasta, baked goods and organic meats – you’ll find all that and more at the brand new “Vine Market,” which will be co-hosted by the awesomely progressive folks at St. Stephen’s Church. Located just a few blocks from the regular market grounds, St. Stephen’s will welcome shoppers every third Saturday from 9 to 11:30am, beginning November 20.

In case you don’t know, St. Stephen’s is where EarthDance Farms hosts the Fresh Ideas Film Series. It’s also home of The Vine, the outreach ministry of St. Stephen’s responsible for selling those decadent ice cream cones you always see at the farmers market. Yum!

So what are you waiting for? Come check out the new Vine Market on November 20th! You’ll find St. Stephen’s at 33 N. Clay, 63135. For more info, email thevinemarket@gmail.com or call 314-753-7911.

Ferguson Farmers Market named #1 in Missouri…AGAIN!

More than 50,000 people nationwide cast a vote in the American Farmland Trust’s 2010 America’s Favorite Farmers Market contest, and finally the results are in. The Ferguson Farmers Market has been named the #1 market in the state of Missouri, as well as the #18 medium-sized market in the entire country!!

As you may know, this represents the second time the market has been honored as #1 in the state. In 2005 & 2006, it was named the Agri-Missouri Farmers Market of the Year. In 2007, it also won a “Best of St. Louis” award from the Riverfront Times.

A huge high-five to market manager Kathy Noelker and all the vendors and volunteers who make the Ferguson Farmers Market so special! Thanks also to everyone who voted!

By the way, did you see what’s happening at the market this weekend? Live music by the Dixie Rhythm Kings, a grilled pizza demo – YUM! – and Buy a Bag for the Hungry Day. Just purchase some extra produce, donate it at the market’s info booth, and your donation will benefit needy families through Operation Food Search. See you Saturday!

Can you bake the perfect All-American Pie?

A few delectable entries from the Ferguson Farmers Market's first All-American Pie contest in 2006. The 2010 bake-off is this Saturday.

On a steamy July day four years ago, I saw one of the most magical things ever: a line of 30 people each bringing me a delicious home-baked pie! It was the Ferguson Farmers Market’s first All-American Pie contest, and these ambitious chefs had stopped at nothing to create the perfect sweet-tooth masterpiece for our judges.

Each pie was lovingly hand-crafted, with a rich golden crust and sometimes a fluffy layer of cream. Some of the recipes were old family secrets; others featured fresh fruit from the market. Still others offered surprising ingredients, like beets or zucchini, which caused the throngs of onlookers surrounding the judges (and sometimes the judges themselves) to make all sorts of entertaining faces.

In the end, it was a classic peach pie that snagged the top prize. And the crowd…well, they gobbled up a table full of pie scraps in record time!

A scene from the judges' table in 2006

We had so much fun that day that the All-American Pie contest has been held every year since, always drawing some phenomenal entries. It has definitely become one of the market’s most popular events. That’s why I’m honored to announce that this year, I’ll be serving as one of the judges!

(Of course it figures that I recently started an intensive diet and exercise program, but oh well. A little bit of pie won’t kill me.)

So…if you’ve got a blue-ribbon recipe up your sleeve, get it to the market THIS SATURDAY, August 14, by 10am. You could win a cash prize!

The Ferguson Farmers Market, located at 20 S. Florissant Road, is open from 8am-noon. There is no fee to enter the All-American Pie contest. The only rule is that you must bake your pie from scratch.

Germanfest returns to the Ferguson Farmers Market!

Come experience the unique charm of the Waterloo German Band - this Saturday at the Ferguson Farmers Market

It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. This Saturday at the Ferguson Farmers Market, everybody will enjoy a little slice of German culture!

From 9-11am, the wonderfully quirky Waterloo German Band will set the mood with some rousing oom-pah-pah music, featuring Swiss bells, a 10-foot alpine horn and loads of sweet, sweet accordion. The band was founded in 1945 and has even played at the White House. But the members aren’t exactly spring chickens, bless their hearts, so you should take in this great St. Louis tradition while you still can!

Listen to the music while sampling locally-made German food: Hefeweizen beer and pulled pork from Hill Brewing Company, secret-family-recipe bratwurst and beefstick from G & W Bavarian Sausage,  apple strudel from the Whistle Stop, potato pancakes from the North County Chamber of Commerce, sausage and head cheese from Live Springs Farm, and German potato salad and infused vinegars from Hellebush der Bauernhof of Hermann, Missouri. Yum!

Germanfest runs from 8am-noon, August 7, at the Ferguson Farmers Market, 20 S. Florissant Road, 63135. All are welcome!
