The SLOUP soup dinner comes to Ferguson
Sloup, a monthly soup dinner that raises money for local artists & nonprofits, will travel to Ferguson on January 29. All are welcome!
For many artists and other creative types, coming up with ideas is not the problem. It’s coming up with the money to implement the ideas that usually hits a snag. That’s where Sloup comes in.
Founded by some clever South City folks back in 2010, this monthly soup dinner tackles the challenge of funding head on, allowing regular people like you and me to pool our cash and donate it to a worthy cause. Basically, a restaurant or other locale provides the soup and bread, charging $10 a person. Then everyone at the Sloup gets a voting packet containing project proposals from local artists.
As you enjoy your soup, you can read through the various ideas. And when the meal is over, everybody votes, a winner is selected, and the top idea gets 100% of the evening’s proceeds!
During 2011, this innovative grant program helped to fund around a dozen worthy projects all over the metro area, including the Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra, Los Caminos, and Ferguson’s own Strings Attached. Who knows what kind of genius ideas might sprout up in 2012? They might even come from you…
The Sloup is scheduled for Sunday, January 29, but you have until Friday, January 27, to submit your one-page proposal. You can check out the project archives here, then complete the following questions and send them in a PDF file to sloup2122@gmail.com.

In the past, Sloup winners have received anywhere from $100 to $1,000, depending on how many people show up to eat soup. Since this is the first event held in North County, I’d love to see a packed house! Let’s break the record and help to fund an awesome creative project!
Sloup #23: The Science of Sloup will be held at St. Stephen’s Church, 33 N. Clay, 63135, with the talented Father Steve Lawler doing the cooking. FYI: your Christmas candles can be recycled!
With so much going on during the holidays, it can be hard to think ahead. But that’s exactly what the fine kids of the Ferguson Youth Initiative (FYI) are asking you to do.
They’re planning an innovative new fundraiser over the winter, in which they make eco-friendly candles using recycled candle wax. These handcrafted candles will be available for sale in March, but first, the kids need your donations!
If you burn candles this Christmas season, please set aside your leftover wax and then bring it to the next Vine Market on January 21. Chunks of old wax are fine, or you can bring the used container too.
That same day, FYI is also wrapping up its winter coat drive, with all proceeds benefiting needy students in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. So now you have three reasons to attend the Vine Market….fresh local food, candle wax and coats! Please donate if you can.
And if you know a local child who is especially creative, you might want to hear that FYI is holding a mascot contest. The best design for “Fergy,” submitted by January 6 at 4pm, will receive a cash prize! The contest is open to anyone under 18, and submissions can be sent to fyi@fergusoncity.com or FYI Mascot Contest, 110 Church Street, Ferguson, MO 63135.

Let’s all cross our fingers for some gorgeous autumn weather, because this weekend is jam-packed with fun events. Which one sounds good to you?
Cycling Cinema – October 21, 6:30 – 9pm
Ride your bike to an outdoor movie at Live Well Ferguson’s first ever Cycling Cinema. Admission is free. Non-glass containers are welcome. And food will be available for purchase. Legally, I can’t tell you what the movie is, but if you’re looking to “break away” for a few hours, this little shindig across from the Ferguson Brewhouse is sure to offer a good time. St. Ann Garage Sale – October 22: 8am – 2pm, October 23: 9am – 1pm
An annual tradition for ten years, the St. Ann Garage Sale in Normandy is a two-day junkers’ delight where you’ll find clothing, furniture, toys and all kids of gently used goodies. Proceeds benefit St. Ann School and the Society of St. Vincent De Paul. Prices are half-off on Sunday. You can also fill a bag for $1 after noon. St. Ann Parish Center, 7530 Natural Bridge, 63121
Arts for Life Musical Revue – October 22: 2pm & 7:30pm, October 23: 2pm
As you’ve probably noticed, there are quite a few people in North County who still haven’t fully recovered from the April tornado. The nonprofit group Arts for Life noticed this too and decided to host a benefit show, with all proceeds going to help tornado survivors in NoCo and Joplin. The performance, entitled “Love Lift Us Up,” will feature 25 songs and more than 100 singers, dancers, actors and musicians. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here. Ferguson Farmers Market – October 22, 8am – noon
There are only two Saturdays left in the market’s 2011 outdoor season, so don’t miss your chance to shop! The Northern Arts Council will be on hand from 9-11am with pumpkin decorating for kids. You can also get your bicycle cleaned and checked for safety from 8-12, and enjoy live music from the always entertaining Boeing Jazz Band (9-11am). 20 S. Florissant Rd, 63135
Trinity Treasures Dinner Auction – October 22, 5:30pm
If you’re an alum of Rosary/Trinity High School in Spanish Lake, here’s your opportunity to show your support. The school is hosting its largest fundraiser of the year this Saturday – a dinner auction just bursting with things to buy! There will be silent and live auctions, raffles and an open bar. Variety Children’s Theatre: The Wizard of Oz – Oct0ber 21: 10am & 7:30pm, October 22: 1:30 & 7pm, October 23: 1:30pm
The magical land of Oz comes to life this weekend at the Touhill, featuring 17 local children who all happen to have a physical disability. This is the third annual show put on by the Variety Children’s Theatre, which seeks to showcase kids of all abilities, and it looks to be a real heart-warmer. Tickets range from $15 to $35 and you can purchase them on the Touhill’s website. Show up in a Wizard of Oz costume and you’ll get a free scoop of ice cream! 1 University Blvd, 63121
North County beer lovers, it’s your time to shine…
It may be hard to believe now, but at one point in the mid-1800s, St. Louis was home to nearly 50 breweries. Immigrants like John Lemp and Adolphus Busch brought their beer brewing knowledge with them from Germany, producing copious amount of bubbly delight until Prohibition basically devastated the industry in 1919.
The Busch empire ended up surviving, of course. The Lemp’s, along with dozens of others, did not. But here’s the good news….
Today, 78 years after the end of Prohibition, St. Louis is again home to a burgeoning beer culture. Besides Anheuser-Busch (InBev/whatever), we now have 15 independent microbreweries in nearly every corner of town, including NoCo’s own Ferguson Brewing Company. And to help celebrate this awesome fact, the Brewhouse is hosting an evening of BEER trivia!
